What is JEE?

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is India’s top engineering entrance exam for undergraduate programs. It includes JEE Main—for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other top institutions—and JEE Advanced—for entry into IITs.

These exams test your proficiency in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. JEE Advanced is more challenging and designed to assess analytical and problem-solving skills. Cracking JEE is the key to entering India’s top engineering colleges.

JEE Advanced 2027 Eligibility Criteria

It is mandatory for the students to meet the specific eligibility criteria established by the exam conducting authority in order to appear for JEE Advanced 2027. Any candidate failing to adhere to the eligibility criteria would not be qualified to appear for the JEE Advanced exam. To be on the safer side, candidates are advised to read the eligibility criteria carefully and check the application form before submitting it.

Criterion A1 – Performance in JEE (Main) 2027:

Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in B.E./B.Tech. paper (Paper 1) of JEE (Main) 2027.

The percentages of various categories of candidates to be shortlisted are as follows: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. Within each of these five categories, 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Category-wise distribution of top 2,50,000* candidates (Criterion A1)

Sl No. Category Number of “Top” candidates
1 OPEN Total 101250
2 OPEN-PwD 5063
3 GEN-EWS Total 25000
4 GEN-EWS-PwD 1250
5 OBC-NCL Total 67500
6 OBC-NCL-PwD 3375
7 SC Total 37500
8 SC-PwD 1875
9 ST Total 18750
10 ST-PwD 938

Criterion A2 – Age Limit:

Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2002. Five years of age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, i.e., these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1997.

Criterion A3 – Number of attempts:

A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Criterion A4 – Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination:

A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2026 or 2027 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

Candidates who had appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2025 or earlier, are NOT eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2027, irrespective of the combination or number of subjects attempted/offered.

* By appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination, it is meant that the Board concerned declared the result for that year irrespective of whether or not examination was conducted.

If the Board declared results for academic year 2024–25 on or after September 21, 2025, candidates are eligible, provided other criteria are fulfilled.

Criterion A5 – Earlier admission at IITs

A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT under any academic program in the past or accepted an IIT seat by reporting online or physically.

Candidates who were admitted to a preparatory course in 2026 can appear in JEE (Advanced) 2027.

If the seat was cancelled before the final round or withdrawn before reporting, they are still eligible.

However, in all of the above cases, the candidate is also required to fulfil the conditions mentioned from Criterion A1 to Criterion A4.

JEE Advanced 2027 Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced is unlike JEE Main in that:

  • The number of questions, types, and marks can vary each year.
  • The paper is designed to test deep conceptual understanding.
  • It consists of two compulsory papers conducted on the same day.
